Bison Killings in Colorado

I lived in Colorado from 2001-2007, and am convinced it's one of the best places to live and raise a family. The people are passionate about the cities they live in, and nearly everyone is in tune to local news and events. I always have a tough time convincing people to take a look at Denver when thinking about relocating, mostly because you never hear about it.

People don't understand why Colorado is such a beautiful place, but that's the way I liked it. The entire state is quiet, clean, friendly, and conscious. The only real problem with Colorado is, it only gets press coverage when things go bad. Columbine, Kobe Bryant, Police beatings, the Rockies losing, and now this. C'mon Colorado!

The fortunate thing - if there is one - about this story, is the monster in this story isn't actually from Colorado. Unfortunately, for me anyway, he is the CEO of a software company located in another one of my favorite cities, Seattle.

Another unfortunate fact about all this, the LA Times has a better report of the incident than both the local Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. (although the Denver Post has been covering the killings since mid March).

I won't go into details about the stories, if you haven't been following them through national news, you can catch up with the links I've provided. To sum it up, Jeff Hawn (our monster) bought property in Colorado, lots of it, and complained because some area bison were eating his grass, trees, and breaking his fences. The bison are privately owned, but Colorado has open range laws allowing animals to wander around as they please. To me, this means if there is a big buffalo eating my flowers, I just deal with it. Sit on your porch and admire the massive beast while he has a nice dessert.

Instead Hawn turned from rancher into hitman. He contracted the killings out to locals - who were smart enough to get the contract notarized - and shot a few himself.

It's too bad it takes another story like this to showcase Colorado. I promise you it's nice...
